The most common time to start a criminal career is during adolescence. Only a small percentage of this group continues life of criminal actions but calculated relapse is rated to be over 60 percent. The purpose of this essay is therefore to analyze why individuals start committing crimes and why they continue a life of crime? What could this be due to? Lays the problem in the community or entirely up to the individual itself?

Through questionnaire with people who have done time in prison, facts about Swedish criminal healthcare, statistics and other literature, the goal is to analyse what causes individuals to choose a life of crime. This has been done with different theories.

The result will show that there are many different factors that can explain the choice of a criminal lifestyle, such as upbringing, environment and stigma. The most common things that attract individuals to crime are the excitement and money, but the main motivation is fear.

A common reason to continuing with criminality is addiction. The abuser’s goal is often different than the norm of society, and how to get there as well. Life revolves around the drug and its use. The abusers way to reach the goal often accelerates to habits that are not socially accepted, such as theft.
It can be extremely difficult to break a pattern of life that is not accepted by the general public. It has been shown that motivation is of significant importance. Both literature and the respondents have called attention to that motivation is the key to freedom from criminality. (Less)
