Abstract
The objective with this master thesis is to analyze how the service life of wood in
ground contact, with regard to decay, varies between different test fields. Different
factors are evaluated whether it is possible to estimate the service life of a specimen
in a specific test field. Also the influence of the climate on the service life in different
test fields is investigated by calculated climate indexes.
A Performance factor, which compares the effectiveness of different wood
preservatives compared to a reference wood piece, has been calculated for different

The objective with this master thesis is to analyze how the service life of wood in
ground contact, with regard to decay, varies between different test fields. Different
factors are evaluated whether it is possible to estimate the service life of a specimen
in a specific test field. Also the influence of the climate on the service life in different
test fields is investigated by calculated climate indexes.
A Performance factor, which compares the effectiveness of different wood
preservatives compared to a reference wood piece, has been calculated for different
common wood preservatives. In order to investigate how the service life varies
between different test fields an Inter-site factor has been calculated. This factor is
determined by comparing the service life of the reference wood pieces in different test
fields to each other. The Inter-site factor together with the Performance factor can be
used to estimate the performance of preservative treated wood in a test field where the
current preservative is not tested. The evaluation is made with a number of different
definitions of the service life of the wood pieces.
The investigation is based on data from different field trials according to the test
method EN 252:1989. The data consists of 41 trials installed between 1968 and 1999
in a number of different fields in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. (Less)
