Today stress is regarded as a big problem in the world. Many studies show an increase in anxiety and depression among young people. Stress is present in school, at home and at play in both boys and girls. Stress is common as a major part of girl's illnesses. How young people choose to handle their stress is of great importance for their wellbeing. A good self-esteem, training and social support are important for young people to be able to control their stress.
The aim with this study was to explore and analyze what kind of stress experiences 18 year old girls have, what kind of strategies the girls have to counter stress and if they feel that there is help and support available for them. The study was based on interviews with six 18-year-old girls. They are on their last year of high school. The girls feel stress every day. School stressed them most because they have a lot to do, at the same time they want to perform well. All six girls are working outside school, because they want to earn their own money so they can buy what they want. Some of the girls think it's important to look good and be fit. This study showed that girls manage their stress differently. Not all of them have strategies to deal with their stress, but wish they had. All six girls feel that they can get help and support from their families and friends to manage their stress, but some of the girls usually prefer to solve their problems by themselves. (Less)
