I conducted a qualitative study in which I interviewed five unit managers from different parts of a local municipality. Seven themes were identified and discussed, and these were: personal reasons for burnout, triggering factors, retention factors, organizational causes of burnout, possible improvements of the organization, prevention in the workplace and the manager’s opportunities to improve the work environment. I used two different theories to discuss my chosen themes and these theories were: organization theory and stress theory. It was revealed in the result that the most common view from unit managers about what causes burnout was considered to be individual problems among employees. It also emerged that the manager’s opportunities to really affect the work environment to reduce the risk of burnout is relatively small.
