Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between mentalization and self-esteem in children in fifth grade. Even though these phenomena have common denominators and seem to be part of a mutual relationship there are few empirical studies who have investigated this relationship. A secondary purpose was to investigate if certain subscales of self-esteem, such as Mental health, Relations to family and Relations to others in I think I am have a stronger relationship to mentalization than others. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between mentalization and self-esteem in children in fifth grade. Even though these phenomena have common denominators and seem to be part of a mutual relationship there are few empirical studies who have investigated this relationship. A secondary purpose was to investigate if certain subscales of self-esteem, such as Mental health, Relations to family and Relations to others in I think I am have a stronger relationship to mentalization than others. The results showed a significant (p < .05) positive correlation between mentalization and self-esteem. Regarding the secondary purpose the results showed a significant (p < .05) positive correlation between Mentalization and the subscale Mental health. The relationship between Mentalization and the subscales Relations to family and Relations to others proved non-significant. The positive correlation between Mentalization and the subscale Relations to others was however close to being significant (p = .07). Beyond these results the study also found a significant (p < .05) positive correlation between Mentalization and the subscale Abilities. The conclusion of the present study was that there is a positive relationship between mentalization and self-esteem. (Less)

Dock var sambandet mellan Mentalisering och delskalan Relation till andra nära signifikant (p = 0,07). Utövar detta visade slutligen resultatet på ett signifikant (p < 0,05) positivt samband mellan Mentalisering och delskalan Färdigheter. Studiens slutsats var att det finns ett positivt samband mellan mentaliseringsförmåga och självkänsla. (Less)
