Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the phenomena of social issues in the media. More specifically the purpose was to find out how the TV-show Nybyggarna addresses homelessness and how they choose to cope with the specific social issue. In relation to how the TV-show chooses to cope with the social issues our aim was also to analyse their perspective on the origin of homelessness. We also aimed to compare the TV-shows method with established methods advocated by Socialstyrelsen for working with homelessness in Sweden. We chose to base our... (More)

In relation to how the TV-show chooses to cope with the social issues our aim was also to analyse their perspective on the origin of homelessness. We also aimed to compare the TV-shows method with established methods advocated by Socialstyrelsen for working with homelessness in Sweden. We chose to base our analysis on Foucaults theories about power and more specifically a disciplinary kind of power. In addition to this we also incorporated the concepts empowerment and paternalism. We found that the TV-show in some way uses the disciplinary power to change the behaviour of the participants. We also discovered that Nybyggarna has an approach that contents influences from both empowerment and paternalism. The origin of homelessness is explained by both individual and structural factors. When compared to the established methods we found both similarities and differences. The most significant difference was that the TV-show offers the participants a sense of being selected. As being homeless can lead to a feeling of exclusion the sense of being selected is proved to be important to the participants in coping with their social issues. (Less)
