The purpose of this study was to examine and analyze how Muslim women manage their religious identity in a secular Christian society, Sweden. Our questions are; What opportunities and limitations are there for Muslim women to practice their religion in Sweden? And what is the relation between the Muslim and non-Muslim population in Sweden? Our study is based on interviews with six Muslim women. The results were analyzed with the help of social constructivism and Zygmunt Baumans theory of freedom and dependency. We also used Judith Butlers theory of gender as a social construction. The main outcome of this study is that it highlights the Muslim woman's social situation in Sweden, and the relationship between Muslims and non-Muslims in Sweden. We also discuss the significance of the Muslim veil and the concept of Islamophobia. (Less)
