Abstract
Governmental employees in Sweden are bound by law to report to the Social Services if they suspect child maltreatment. Studies have found that pre-schoolteachers to a lesser extent report suspected child maltreatment than other agencies working with children. The aim of this study is to examine pre-schoolteachers’ view of the law governing teachers responsibility to report suspected child maltreatment, and what obstacles they might face with the law. The study is based on seven qualitative interviews with pre-schoolteachers from different schools in a municipal in southern Sweden.

The result of the study is that the pre-schoolteachers find it difficult to use the mandatory notification law, not knowing what will be the best outcome for the children. There is a lot of different aspects to a child’s wellbeing that their teachers have to consider before they feel they can make a rightful decision to notify the social services or not. The teachers’ relation with the child’s parents and the relations with head teacher and colleagues can both serve as an obstacle or as assistance to report suspected child maltreatment. So even though the law is simple the reality is still complex. (Less)
