Abstract
According to the national public survey “Health on equal terms” around 20 percent of all the children in Sweden (385 000) is growing up with a parent that is consuming alcohol in a risk full way (Statens folkhälsoinstitut 2008). These children often experience different strains in their life taking big responsibility in the family. The aim of this study was to investigate experiences in growing up with a substance abusing parent. Following the aim, three research questions were asked: What kind of problematic situations were described and related to the alcohol abuse? What kinds of strategies were used to handle the situations? Were there any patterns of how the authors wrote about their childhood?

Following the aim, three research questions were asked: What kind of problematic situations were described and related to the alcohol abuse? What kinds of strategies were used to handle the situations? Were there any patterns of how the authors wrote about their childhood?
The method used was a qualitative approach, analyzing four autobiographies written by people with child experiences of growing up with an alcohol abusing parent. The autobiographies were analyzed by theoretical concepts as stigma, roles and coping. Four situations were identified in the autobiographies that the children found problematic. To handle these situations many children took the role as the family hero and combined it with different emotion based coping stiles while chancing these when growing older. I also found some interesting patterns of how the authors told their stories and focused on hope and creating a new relationship with the parent. (Less)
