- Abstract
- This report summarizes the conclutions of a Master Thesis at Lund University (LTH) in cooperation with Scania CV AB R & D during the fall of 2010 and winter 2011. The mission is to improve the eating and writing ability (EWA) in truck cabs.
A EWA offers truck driver to eat and write inside the cab. A EWA can for example be a countertop, a full table or a simple cup holder. There is great potential for development in the area of EWA at Scania and therefore as carried out in the report, a study truck driver's needs, the cabins potential to develop in the area and thereafter development of new solutions.

Truck driver needs is controlled by the work situation and, so Scania offers a wide variety of truck cabins suited for longer runs so called "Long Haulage Cabs" and for local distribution or construction. Drivers therefore have different requirements on how a EWA should be designed and Scania would like to develop solutions that cover as many cab models in the cab segment as possible.
In order to develop a basis for concept development a field investigation and market survey was carried out, containing interviews with drivers and meetings with employees at Scania. The work also included several group workshops in order to evaluate and generate a large number of concept ideas. Beyond this I also used my own experiences from the education at Lund University.
Important needs are identified and compiled in important representative target characters, and in a number of significant criteria, which during the development process is used to generate and screen concept proposals. The survey shows that some criteria are more important than others, and therefore have greater impact on future concept development. Driver's movement inside the cab and in and out of the cab, ergonomics and accessibility becomes prominent criteria during the development process.
The criteria finally results in two final concepts. Agile Table, a EWA which generally offers superior driver mobility, great user comfort and a large countertop. Agile Table is a concept which is designed for the more orderly drivers who spend much time in the cab and place high demands on the equipment in the cab. PortClick Table, a EWA which provides a simple portable solution for flexible use, designed for the less demanding drivers with more stressful driving schedules and shorter runs.
The concept solutions are analyzed continuously during the development process through physical and virtual modeling. (Less)
