The Second grade choir – an analysis of a children's choir project in Malmö; social, pedagogic and musical experiences.

The Second grade choir is a project that is running since autumn 2011, at the culture school in Malmö. It is addressed towards all pupils in second grade of primary school in Malmö. The Second grade choir is about letting pupils practice and learn a number of songs with physical movements in their respective classes and then after one term perform them together at a con-cert in the people´s park of Malmö. The goal with the project is: to let the pupils be active through singing and movements; to make the pupils apply to the courses offered by the culture school, particularly to the less popular instruments; to create a meeting place for the teachers of the culture school and the parents, who are the ones who decide the pupils activities; to give children and parents from different districts the opportunity to meet and thereby hopefully contribute to increased integration. The purpose of my work is to see how the second grade choir has functioned pedagogical, socially and musical and also to see if the interest of playing an instrument for the pupils has changed after the end of the project. I have also discussed how the project can develop and finally I have tried to identify experiences from the second grade choir project which could be useful to the next big project at the culture school El Sistema - which is about letting children in socially vulnerable districts learn how to play an instrument together. I have done a qualitative study based on interviews with students and teachers from two schools in different parts of Malmö, the two project leaders and the head of the culture school. The results show that the children are encouraged by the performance in the people´s park. More children want to apply to the school but the possibilities for children from different districts to meet (integrate) within and outside the project are limited. The desire of the pupils to move, to perform and thus develop as individuals, with the help of the power of the music, the culture school can bring on into the work with El Sistema.

Tvåornas kör är en verksamhet som Kulturskolan i Malmö driver sedan hösten 2011 och som riktar sig till alla elever i årskurs två i Malmö. Tvåornas kör handlar om att eleverna ska träna in ett antal sånger med rörelser i sina respektive klasser, för att sedan framföra dessa tillsam-mans vid en konsert i Malmö Folkets park. Målet med verksamheten är: att eleverna själva ska vara aktiva genom att få sjunga och röra på sig; att få eleverna att söka sig till Kultursko-lans kurser, inte minst på mindre populära instrument; att skapa en mötesplats för kulturskolans personal och elevernas föräldrar, som är de som bestämmer över elevernas aktiviteter; att ge elever och föräldrar från olika stadsdelar möjlighet att träffas för att därigenom förhopp-ningsvis bidra till ökad integration. Syftet med min undersökning är att se hur tvåornas kör har fungerat pedagogiskt, socialt och musikaliskt samt att se om elevernas intresse för att spela instrument har förändrats efter projektets avslut. Jag har också diskuterat hur projektet kan utvecklas. Slutligen har jag försökt identifiera vilka erfarenheter projektet kan bidra med till Kulturskolans nästa stora projekt, El Sistema, som handlar om att barn i socialt utsatta områden tillsammans ska få lära sig spela olika instrument. Jag har genomfört en kvalitativ intervjustudie med elever och klasslärare från två skolor i olika delar av Malmö, två projektledare för tvåornas kör samt chefen för kulturskolan. Resultatet visar att eleverna sporras av uppträdandet i Folkets park, att fler söker sig till kulturskolan för att spela och sjunga, men att möjligheten för barn från olika stadsdelar att träffas (integrera) inom och utanför projektet är begränsad. Elevernas lust att få röra på sig, uppträda på scen och därmed utvecklas som individer, med musikens kraft, kan kulturskolan ta med sig in i arbetet med El Sistema.
