This essay examines especially Russia`s role in the civil war in Syria that started on 15 March year 2011. External actors` political views, their cooperation with Russia and their interests in Syria have also been processed in this paper. My methodology consists of qualitative text analysis. An open approach was used when I have practiced my textual analysis. This means that the investigation is controlled by the contents of the texts rather than my own thoughts. I have used all kinds of textual material that I think have been appropriate for my problem area. It has been shown that the external relationship with Syria depends on various factors and how they are perceived as human rights, the global order, and the sovereignty of the people. Security dilemma, balance of power and multi polarity are concepts which belong to Russia's role in Syria along with other external actors. Russia has proven to have an economic role and a power political role in the civil war in Syria. (Less)
