Abstract
This essay is a comparative textual analysis on the subject of reparation for victims of human rights violations. The purpose is to examine how the state of Australia shows its commitment to reparation for its indigenous peoples. It is commonly known that they have suffered injustices for a great period of time since the colonisation of Australia and in this essay I will especially consider the Stolen Generations as a ground for their demand of reparation. The Van Boven/Bassiouni-principles of reparation shape the basis of my theory and are also used as a part of my method, as I compare the content of official statements with these principles in order to find common features. These statements are former Prime Minister John Howard's "Motion of reconciliation", former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's national apology and the Statement of Intent for the campaign "Close the Gap". This analysis shows Australia's commitment to some areas of reparation and the total neglect of others, namely monetary compensation to victims. According to the Van Boven/Bassiouni-principles all are expected to be fulfilled in order to give the indigenous peoples of Australia full reparation for the violations of their human rights. (Less)
