- Abstract
- This report is made in order to evaluate the safety, in case of a fire, of personnel and patients in the surgical facilities at Helsingborg General Hospital. The problem that arises in this report is regarding the evacuation of patients that are undergoing surgery. This is a problem since it can take up to 60 minutes to finish a surgery and make a patient ready for evacuation.
To determine the fire safety a measurement was made of how long time it takes before critical conditions arise in the facilities versus how long time it takes for personnel to evacuate.
The measurement should be considered as the time the staff has at their disposal to finish the surgeries and evacuate the patients. In order to do this a probabilistic analysis was made, taking into account various scenarios with their likelihood of happening and the consequences they would bring.
The measurement showed that the staff only has 5 minutes, at max, to finish surgery and evacuate patients. This short time is below the required time for evacuation of the patients. This means that the criteria for human safety is not fulfilled.
Therefore, different solutions to improve the fire safety was presented and evaluated. The conclusion in the evaluation process shows that the best, and most cost-efficient, way to fulfill the criteria for human safety is to install a sprinkler system within the facilities. (Less)
