Abstract
Islam is often being criticized for not offering equal rights for women and men. Even if the criticism usually indicates the same problems in Islam, there’s a big difference on how the criticism is presented and what the basis of these arguments are. By applying the theory about how gender roles in a religious context are a product of socialization and how these gender roles could be replaced with roles more suitable for women if only women could get more power to change them, - I came to the conclusion that H.Ali’s arguments did not support the theory in the same degree as E.Saadawi’s did. Mainly because Hirsi Ali saw the problems in the religion itself, and not something that is created by socialization and society. (Less)
