- Abstract
- Due to the lack of cohesiveness and progress in the academic field concerning statelessness, this essay examines a cross-section of said academic field to determine its ‘blind spots’. By determining the blind spots this essay aims to give new input that may result in further research concerning the pressing issue of statelessness. Seven academic articles are scrutinized and compared in order to reveal five aspects that the scholars ignore or misconceive: global responsibility, inter-state hierarchies, state sovereignty, the unique status of statelessness, and the hierarchal relationship of actual people’s status. These are then tested and brought into a short dialogue with three political documents, chosen to represent the discourse... (More)

These are then tested and brought into a short dialogue with three political documents, chosen to represent the discourse concerning statelessness in the context of Sweden. The dialogue shows how the blind spots are reflected in the political discourse and how they influence the persons affected by statelessness. Finally, the essay argues that the academic field and the political discourse concerning statelessness ought to look beyond the foundational dichotomy of Statelessness – Citizenship, and instead focus on qualitative aspects of individuals spatial, political and cultural ‘moveability’, i.e. how and to what extent people can lay claims to and utilise their freedom of movement.
