The purpose of this study was to investigate the perception of the female addict in Lotta Thells autobiographical five novels, in comparison to the scientific definitions of female abuse, based on discourse theory and social constructivism. We have been using selected concepts such as self-esteem, ‘’whore’’ and femininity to explore how the image of the female addicts are challenged and reproduced in our material. The result was that most of the beliefs surrounding the female addict correspond with the first of the scientific definitions where she is seen as vulnerable and deviant. The second scientific definition, sees the abusive woman like any woman. Though, this definition is not very prevalent in the books, apart from few occasions, where her friends mention her as “any woman”. (Less)
