Abstract
The aim of our study was to examine how school counselors, through their retelling, understands and work with cases that involves students, either exposed or that are subjecting others, to cyberbullying. The study is based on a phenomenological theory and a phenomenological analysis. We have come to the conclusion that the meaning and the space that the internet has in the everyday life of the school counselor is the starting point for their understanding and work with cyberbullying. We have, from the perspective of the school counselor, found a link between cyberbullying and traditional bullying at school. The aim of our study was to examine how school counselors, through their retelling, understands and work with cases that involves students, either exposed or that are subjecting others, to cyberbullying. The study is based on a phenomenological theory and a phenomenological analysis. We have come to the conclusion that the meaning and the space that the internet has in the everyday life of the school counselor is the starting point for their understanding and work with cyberbullying. We have, from the perspective of the school counselor, found a link between cyberbullying and traditional bullying at school. We conclude that school counselors work with cyberbullying from various action plans and programs, which generally consists of individual conversations with students. The programs are designed after the traditional school bullying. School counselors experience this as problematic as the measures are directed to the school environment not including the Internet. In order to develop their work with cyberbullying school counselors argue that they need more resources, such as knowledge and training. (Less)
