Abstract
This study examines the impact that homelessness may have on young homeless people and how it could be explained that the situation can lead to mental illness and future consequences for these individuals. This was achieved by using qualitative content analysis to explore five international studies and also applying Lazarus’ Coping theory and Antonovsky’s theory of Sense of Coherence. The studies used, four qualitative interview studies and one cross-sectional study, were all focused on young homeless people and conducted in Canada, USA and Australia. Through the results and narratives that emerges from these five studies it has been possible to take note of young people’s understanding of home and homelessness. The perception of home was... The perception of home was closely related to feelings of control, security, independence, family and stability. The other two themes explored were experiences of stress and coping, related to how these may affect the perception of self and the world. The main stressors mentioned in these studies were lack of social support, drug use and oppression from the mainstream society. Coping strategies often used by these young homeless people proved to be passive problem solving, self-destructive coping and socially determined strategies. It was concluded that, within the context of the chosen theories, this thesis can contribute with an explanatory view of the relationship between homelessness and the development of mental illness.
