Biologiskt frisk men kulturellt sjuk: en diskursanalys av hur menstruation och menstruerande framställs i reklam- och informationstexter
(2013) GNVK01 20131Department of Gender Studies
- Abstract
- This essay discuss how menstruation can be understood as a social phenomenon and how expectations about a particular menstrual behaviour are made. In order to demonstrate how medical texts and an ad for sanitary pads contribute to sustain and reproduce this discourse, Laclau and Mouffe's discouse theory is used. By analyzing terms of body control, expected emotional reactions to menstruation and the construction of a female sick role, the aim is to examine not only how the
discourse is made but how it can be challenged. The essay is written from a queer feministic point of view with the intention to reveal how language creates understandings and assumptions about
gender.
