Abstract
The purpose of this study is to describe and analyze the role of a foster parent and its commission. By interviewing five foster families we have been given answers to our purpose, question formulations and transcribed the interviews. We have examined the foster parents’ experience of the family conception and their relation to the foster child, their motive of becoming a foster home and how they experience the economical fee they are getting by being a foster home. We have also examined the foster parents’ experience of the relation between the foster child and their biological parents. The result is that neither of the foster homes see their commission as a job. They want to give a child a good home where they can grow up with good care,... (More)

We have also examined the foster parents’ experience of the relation between the foster child and their biological parents. The result is that neither of the foster homes see their commission as a job. They want to give a child a good home where they can grow up with good care, love and laughter, but they also say that the extra time and work the foster child’s needs requires a fee. The biological parents turned out to be a difficulty in foster families with young foster children, though in the foster families with older foster children, the biological parents did not seem like an issue. The foster families with young foster children experienced the foster child as their own biological children, in comparison to foster families with older foster children, which described it more like they where a friend with rules. In all the foster families the initiative of becoming a foster home was the woman’s suggestion. We have analyzed the result of the interviews with theories such as individualization and risk society.
