Abstract
The Rheology of asphalt binders is crucial for the function and durability of road pavements. In the American road concept Superpave, which has been in use for about 20 years, old empirical methods has been replaced with a rheological measurement technology in the form of DSR. With this technology, the functional properties of binders are described in basic rheological terms. The department of Technology and Society at LTH decided to acquire a DSR and launch the engineering work with a thesis. The purpose of the work is to set good basis for future theses, dissertations and research. A manual for the operation of DSR has been developed to ease further studies of the asphalt binder. Information and education was obtained from the supplier of the equipment, Anton Paar Nordic AB in Malmö, and from Nynas AB, in Nynäshamn, having a similar device. To give a few examples of the instruments versatility, some standard tests was performed complemented with some variations, including methods from Superpave. The bitumens examined were of standard grade: 160/220, 70/100, 50/70 and 70/100 with the addition of wax. Polymeric substances, among which bitumen is included, are characterized by their rheological response, depending on the temperature and the loads frequency or time duration. To get a complete picture of a substance quality, these parameters must vary. This is achieved by a standard measurements used by Nynas AB. Results from the measurements are presented in the report, showing an acceptable consistency with measurements made by a experienced laboratory engineer. The wax modification exhibited effects having possible positive technical road significance, as enhanced stiffness in the temperature range 40 to 80° C. This can prevent rutting, which normally occurs at these temperatures. This conclusion is supported by a limited study according to Superpave. Future studies should focus on development of methods, education and external information about the usefulness of this technology. This measurement technology needs to be adapted to Swedish road building techniques in order to replace hitherto used empirical measurement methods and to open up for a functional development of road pavements.
