Abstract (Swedish)

(Less)

In the past all geographical information was stored in paper format, but it has now been digitalized and stored in computers. This thesis has focused on how to take the next step, from the computer to the mobile phone. Today's technological advances in the mobile market have given us an entirely new platform to spread information on. Smartphones are like small laptops that have access to the Internet almost anywhere they are.

This project has focused on how to develop a tool for surveyors, a tool that allows them to reach the information they need in the field. This tool shall have the ability to retrieve information, but also send information to the server. All this will be done from the user's smartphone; it is therefore a mobile application that has been investigated. Although the project is aimed at surveyors it is intended that one should take knowledge from the project, knowledge that can then be applied to other departments within the municipality. The project will therefore present more than one possible solution.

The first step was to collect comprehensive information and conditions about the project. This was followed by interviews with some of the future users. A needs analysis was carried out and their opinions were recorded, which was then used to compile a list of requirements. These specifications determine the requirements for the final product. The requirements are then assigned a respective priority level (between one and three). First priority requirements are a must for the final product‘s approval, while the second and third are only desired if possible.

After the needs analysis and the priority level is set the next step was to examine already existing similar systems to get knowledge for what is possible to do on a mobile device. It was also examined whether or not there were any already finished products that could be useful in this case. Both apps and so called web apps were studied. A web app is a website that looks and acts like a regular app.

A thorough examination was carried out of the technical background to investigate which solutions that was possible and what they required to work. Some solutions were discarded after further studies while some were studied more throughout. In the end three different solutions where chosen for the server side and three for the client side. Server side is where all the information is located, and the client side is where the user is located. The various solutions were presented, how they interact with each other and their pros and cons. It is also discussed in which situation each solution is most appropriate, and which solution that is most suitable for this very project.

In the end a solution was selected where the server side use both ArcGIS Server and ArcGIS Online, two solutions that Kalmar municipality already has licenses for. On the client side an already finished app was chosen, called ArcGIS Collector. It is free to use. It is an easy solution since it’s using an existing app, but it also works very well in general. You get more flexibility when developing your own app, but it requires time and money that is not quiet justified in this case. (Less)
