Abstract
The purpose of the study was to elucidate the significance of psycho-dynamic therapy for young adults while working from a client perspective. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with four former clients, all of whom had completed therapy four to five years prior. The interview material was initially condensed using five questions taken from hermeneutic single case efficacy design. The condensed material was then thematized on the basis of hermeneutic principles of interpretation, allowing particularly significant themes in the respondents' narratives to come into focus, viewed within a time perspective that stretched from their therapeutic experiences to their present life situation. The themes were finally examined in relation to... (More)

Semi-structured interviews were conducted with four former clients, all of whom had completed therapy four to five years prior. The condensed material was then thematized on the basis of hermeneutic principles of interpretation, allowing particularly significant themes in the respondents' narratives to come into focus, viewed within a time perspective that stretched from their therapeutic experiences to their present life situation. The themes were finally examined in relation to psycho-dynamic therapy and theory. The results were gathered under four principal themes that reflect the significance of therapy: ambivalence, narration, self-affirmation, and delimitation. A description was made of the participants' mental health today, along with contextual factors that may have contributed to the changes. The participants' stories showed that process of narration during therapy led to insight, and that both of these factors are significant for the clients' development in an extended time-perspective. The therapeutic relationship seems to play an important role in this context. (Less)
