Abstract
This master’s thesis is about the intermediation of identity at six of the largest museums of cultural history in the Öresund Region. The aim is to examine which the main discourses are at the museums and how they effect the intermediation of identity. By an examination of how identity is mediated at the museums of cultural history in the Öresund Region, the aim is also to create new knowledge about how the concept of identity is visible at these institutions and to make the museums aware of their own and other museums work with intermediation. The questions for research are:

• How do the museums of cultural history in the Öresund Region intermediate a national, transnational, regional and/or local identity?
• How does the cultural... (More)
This master’s thesis is about the intermediation of identity at six of the largest museums of cultural history in the Öresund Region.

• How does the cultural policies effect the intermediation at the museums in the Öresund Region?
• What does the cooperation between the museums in the Öresund Region look like?
• Which are the main discourses for intermediation of identity at the museums in the Öresund Region?

To answer these questions, we have performed interviews and observations at six museums to collect the empirical data, upon which the discourse analysis is based. The museums are The Danish Museum of Technology in Helsingör, Dunkers Kulturhus in Helsingborg, Kulturen in Lund, The Museum of Copenhagen, Malmo Museums and The National Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen. In the study of these museums we have applied a critical theory about the post-museum in order to shed light on the pluralistic tendencies. The museums show such tendencies in their work with intermediation of identity. But the museums also reflect the national discourses, which are bound to the cultural policies. The transnational discourse in the Öresund Region is created in the meeting between Denmark and Sweden on a national level. Therefor, the museums are able to, by cooperating over the national borders, emb¬race the transnational identities.

The conclusions of this master’s thesis are that the museums of cultural history in the Öresund Region have different ways of understanding identity and that intermedi-ation of identity is bound to specific situations, while the pluralistic principles are more constant. The effects of the cultural policies at the museums are bound to the national context. In Sweden the concept of diversity is prominent, while the national identity is more present in Denmark. Today, cooperation between museums in the Öresund Region is limited. The transnational process takes place in the internal work, but does not reach out to the users. (Less)
