Forskning har kunnat visa att aktiv framplockning av tidigare inlärda minnen kan hämma framplockning av konkurrerande minnen vilket leder till en framplockningsinducerad glömska, kallad retrieval-induced forgetting, RIF. Denna form av glömska tillskrivs ofta en kognitivt inhiberande process som aktiveras för att försvåra framplockning av icke relevanta konkurrerande minnen till förmån för underlättad framplockning av eftersökta minnen. Studier har visat ett positivt samband mellan arbetsminneskapacitet, WMC, och RIF vilket antas avspegla en högre förmåga till inhibition för individer med hög WMC, kognitiv belastning har visat sig försvåra inhibition.
