The aim of this study was to examine what differences there were between how medical counselors define themselves and the expectations of the medical professions working alongside them. The aim was also to examine what possible changes can be made to strengthen the medical counselors’ professional position. The analysis was based on semi-structured interviews with six medical counselors working at hospitals located in southern Sweden. The theory used to highlight and analyze was a combination of different aspects of different theories of professions. The terms used are attributes of different definitions of professions and includes among others education, organization and knowledgebase. The study found that there were differences in identity and expectations. The counselors’ main objective was to create a holistic perspective of the patient through use of knowledge, empathy and ability to sense the patient’s needs. These three values were together with the social work degree the foundation of the counselors’ identity. Other professions sometimes wished for a faster approach to a patient’s situation than the counselor saw fit. One of the ways to strengthen the medical counselors’ identity and professional position is to evaluate their methods and by doing so become more equal to the other professions who already practices evidence based work.
