Abstract
Sandvik SRP AB in Svedala has recently made a big investment in a completely new production facility that is called Greenfield. The facility will be ready for production in 2013 and will have eleven top modern axle lathe- and vertical boring milling machines. The machines will process casting to parts for the stone crushers Sandvik SRP in Svedala manufacture. The goal with Greenfield is to get world-class production with higher capacity than today. The aim of the master thesis is to build a simulation model for the production flow in Greenfield in the event-driven simulation program Extend. The outcome from different scenarios are being analyzed where batch size, annual volume and quality defects are the factors being changed. Re-sults... (More)

Re-sults regarding for example machine utilization, buffer areas and bottlenecks are obtained and analyzed. The company is working with Lean production through their improvement program Nautilus. Nautilus consists of six prin-ciples regarding continuous improvements and a structured and systematic way of working. The goal is also to implement the Nautilus principles in Greenfield, which implies that Lean production philosophies will be apparent. To that purpose, lean production is discussed in the thesis. Simulations are advantageously used if the object does not exist, is highly complex or if tests are too expensive. A properly designed simulation model may increase the understanding of the key factors in achieving a good result. Sandvik SRP AB has no previous experience of simulating production flows. The company is supportive to the simulation project as they found great benefits in obtaining essential information that can be used in other Greenfield pro-jects as well. The data were gathered through surveys, interviews, literature studies and analyses of historical data. The approach for the modeling of the flow is to develop the model in miniscule steps so that any changes made to the model can be continuously evaluated. Validation of the model is very important to avoid invalid results. The simulations indicate that the re-sources are well distributed and no bottlenecks are identified. However there is a need for a higher capacity to manage an increase in the annual produc-tion volume or in one-piece flow. In Greenfield the areas for storage are small and will require a good planning of production and buffer areas. The simulation model created in this thesis can be used for future tests of future changes in production. (Less)
