Alunskiffern i Östergötland : utbredning, mäktigheter, stratigrafi och egenskaper

Abstract
The alum shale has for centuries been of interest and was an important resource in Sweden's early industrial history through the manufacturing of alum - a potassium aluminium sulfate. In addition to describing the chemical properties this paper also include a brief description of some of the chemical processes that are responsible for the enrichment of oil, gas and uranium. The alum shale in the Swedish province of Östergötland has been described with respect to its distribution and physical and chemical properties by studying publications, maps and borings. The alum shale has for centuries been of interest and was an important resource in Sweden's early industrial history through the manufacturing of alum - a potassium aluminium sulfate. In addition to describing the chemical properties this paper also include a brief description of some of the chemical processes that are responsible for the enrichment of oil, gas and uranium. The alum shale in the Swedish province of Östergötland has been described with respect to its distribution and physical and chemical properties by studying publications, maps and borings. The alum shale in Östergötland is a source of biogenic gas which have long been known to migrate up through the surface and has in recent years spiked an interest in gas extraction and is currently being explored by private companies. This paper has therefore had the objective to describe and give an idea of what conditions there are for gas extraction in the area. Furthermore, a short description of the alum shales history of use and paleogeography is also present in this paper. The alum shale of Östergötland is, compared to other alum shale areas in Sweden, poorly researched, and many analyzes and drillings are made in the 1930's and 40's. Overall, the thicknesses is about 15 to 20 meters, and represents three units where the two younger from upper Cambrian and lower Ordovician are the most economically interesting. The alum shale has decent potential for the extraction of unconventional shale oil. The amount of biogenic gas present within the shale area looks promising but the gas is difficult to extract. Besides uranium and possibly vanadium and molybdenum, no other trace elements are deemed to be economically viable for extraction. It should be noted that there are several trace elements and metals for which no chemical analysis has been conducted that could occur and which are of interest today, such as rare earth elements. Dessutom har alunskiffern varit intressant som källa och reservoar för olja och gas. Förutom de kemiska egenskaperna har även en del av de kemiska processerna i frågan om uppkomsten av petroleum, gas och uran tagits upp. Alunskiffern i Östergötland och dess egenskaper har kartlagts och beskrivits. Den här studien har därför haft som mål att beskriva alunskifferns utbredning, kemiska och fysikaliska egenskaper samt utreda förutsättningarna för gasutvinning. Även en skildring av alunskifferns användningshistorik samt paleogeografiska historia har ingått i arbetet. Östergötlands alunskiffer är jämfört med andra alunskifferområden i Sverige bristfälligt undersökt, de flesta analyser och borrningar är gjorda på 1930- och 40-talen. Överlag är alunskifferns mäktighet blygsam, ca 15 - 20 meter, och representerar tre distinkta enheter där de två yngre från överkambrium och ordovicium är de ekonomiskt mest intressanta. Alunskiffern bedöms ha hyfsat goda förutsättningar för utvinning av okonventionell skifferolja. Den biogena gasen bedöms som intressant men svår att utvinna. Förutom uran samt möjligen vanadin och molybden har inga andra ekonomiska spårämnen värda att utvinna påträffats. Det saknas kemiska analyser för ett flertal andra ämnen som skulle kunna förekomma och som är av intresse idag, t ex sällsynta jordartsmetaller. (Less)
