Abstract
This report aims to produce a summarized overview of available knowledge about lightweight joists and their behavior when subjected to fire. It also aims to analyze the possible impact of lightweight joists on the fire departments ability to handle a residential fire. The report is based mostly on literature studies on both foreign and domestic sources but discussed and analyzed from a Swedish perspective. The report is divided into five different areas. The results of the report also points to the fact that structural damage will increase if the fire gets in to a construction made of lightweight materials. More studies are needed on construction fires, risk assessment, evacuation of small dwellings and statistics on structural damage due to fire based on type of joists to be able to handle the new risks introduced with lightweight joists.
