Abstract (Swedish)
Differences in technological traditions we find between Neanderthals and anatomically modern
humans has long been debated. It is important to discuss whether the differences in the handling of
flint and other raw materials between the two populations . The use of raw materials are obviously
directly related to the production of tools used to acquire food . Besides the quality of the material,
also, to how and what materials were used, influence whether a group hominins are effective
hunters or not. If a technological tradition solely relied on lithic resources it will have its limitations

compared to a tradition that gather resources from materials like antler and bone. Also what kind of
hunting weapons where used during the middle-palaeolithic, and how recent research affects the
general picture of hunting habits of the hunter/gatherer. Discussions on the subject of the different
hunting weapons that where available to the Neanderthal respective modern humans is a ongoing
debate. It is important look at all the aspects of the tools used by palaeolithic hunters to get new
perspectives on the current state of the ongoing research on the subject of Neanderthal and modern
humans, Ca. 40 000 BP. the time for the colonization of Europe.
The base for this essay is through qualitative assemblage of fact from several different
sources, with the goal of doing a analysis of the current state of research regarding the first humans
colonizing Europe. The focus will be on how the archaeological literature and other scientific
writings represent and interpret findings related to hunting. The interest will be to see the picture
given of the differences and similarities between homo sapiens and homo neanderthalensis in
archaeological material. How and what conclusions are drawn from the analyses of the artifacts.
How does previous research stand towards new discoveries and theories? Are there contradictions
between different studies or is there a common thread to follow through literature? (Less)
