- Abstract
- This essay is concerning the consequences that may occur out of media reactions. In this survey, I am examining a few articles from three Swedish leading newspapers for the purpose to show how African countries can be presented in media. By criticizing the different articles’ way of portraying Africa, I am demonstrating that the author of the article can formulate situations in particular ways. It is possible that those formulations and presentations of a certain country or group of people will lead to distinction. I refer to distinction of attitudes between the Swedish reader and the African character described in the article, because of differences stated in the article. In this survey, I am examining a few articles from three Swedish leading newspapers for the purpose to show how African countries can be presented in media. By criticizing the different articles’ way of portraying Africa, I am demonstrating that the author of the article can formulate situations in particular ways. I refer to distinction of attitudes between the Swedish reader and the African character described in the article, because of differences stated in the article. This distinction may be the purpose of the article but it does not necessarily have to be. By using different notions and theories from a few scholars, I have chosen particular areas to focus on during the survey. This material will help me get answers on my issue together with the material from the articles I have chosen to examine. My essay originates from the question: how do some articles from three leading Swedish newspapers represent African countries out of a “distinction perspective”? Having this as the base of my essay, I am therefore giving much focus on how leading Swedish newspapers might be a factor for possible distinction between Sweden and African countries. I reach a conclusion that the effects from media do have an influence on its receivers depending on how the newspapers present something. This can for example be made by methods like using stereotypical formulations or by presenting the story in a way that the responsibility and capability lies only with the “west”. (Less)
