Abstract
The essay investigates how the Swedish national football team was portrayed during the UEFA Women's Euro 2013 in the national newspapers: Aftonbladet, Dagens Nyheter, Expressen and Svenska Dagbladet. The aim of the essay is to demonstrate how masculinity is reproduced in newspaper articles through critical discourse analysis and with the application of Robert Connell and Jesper Fundberg's theories on masculinity. The writers argue that the frequency and manner with which masculinity is described gives this conception a hegemonic position in society. A primary focus is also to look at the discourse of football as a power structure, as well as a framework in which the subject is created. The essay then discusses the consequences that follow.... A primary focus is also to look at the discourse of football as a power structure, as well as a framework in which the subject is created. The essay then discusses the consequences that follow. The method used in the essay is Teun A. Van Dijk’s critical discourse analysis. An essential part of the method is to examine the relation between dominance and discourse and how it is shown. The essay emphasizes that the reproduction of masculinity exists, and uses the idealisation of physical strength as an example. It is also established that the football players are given a subordinate position as illustrated by trivialized descriptions and comparison with their male counterparts. Consequently it is concluded in the essay that the national team is defined within the framework of the discourse’s structure, which subsequently limits the possibility to alter its evolution. The closing remarks of the essay contain a reflective and critical analysis of its findings, as well as encouraging further discussion and elaboration to better address media’s effects on gender equality in the athletic world. Abstract (Swedish)
(More)
