Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the Swedish rape structure as it is depicted in recent news media coverage, through a examination of approximately 70 news articles published by the daily news paper Dagens Nyheter (DN) in 2013. This has been done through a variant of critical discourse analysis along with feminist theory and a few analytical concepts such as sensationalism, rape myth, victim blaming and pathologization. The first part of the analysis covers the production and consumption of the media coverage on rape in DN, while the other part focuses on the content and language in specific articles. The first part of the analysis shows that the image of the Swedish rape structure does not fully conform to the image that is... (More)

The first part of the analysis shows that the image of the Swedish rape structure does not fully conform to the image that is presented in the reports by the Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention. Through the examination of the articles it is possible to identify a tendency toward sensationalism in Dagens Nyheter’s news coverage on rape. At the same time the outcome of the second part of the analysis shows that the DN coverage uses a rather neutral language, and that there is no explicit victim blaming or pathologization present in the examined articles. However, there is examples of formulation and detailed descriptions that can seem problematic concerning the view of the victim and perpetrator in relation to the prevalent rape structure and rape culture. In conclusion, the most central problem concerning the news coverage on rape in DN is the impact of the sensationalism on the production and consumption of the coverage on rape, and the misleading image of the rape structure that results from it. Abstract (Swedish)
(More)
