- Abstract
- This essay examines femme-identity through femmes own experiences. The focus of the study is clothing as a communicative medium for identity and performative acts to create your own self. The aim is to understand what it means to be femme, how the femme-identity is expressed visually and how the identity is negociated in different contexts.
Theoretically the essay is based on queer theory regarding norms and performativity by Judith Butler and fashion theories including self-fashioning by Joanne Finkelstien.
My method for conducting the study has been five qualitative semi-structured interwievs with self identified femmes in Malmö.
Themes that emerged from the interwievs include: feminine drag, femme as an autonomous self- elected... (More) - This essay examines femme-identity through femmes own experiences. Theoretically the essay is based on queer theory regarding norms and performativity by Judith Butler and fashion theories including self-fashioning by Joanne Finkelstien.
My method for conducting the study has been five qualitative semi-structured interwievs with self identified femmes in Malmö.
Themes that emerged from the interwievs include: feminine drag, femme as an autonomous self- elected femininity, femme as an expression of identity, disidentification with heterosexual women and invisibility in homonormative contexts.
The results obtained reveals femme as an identity which is missinterpreted as a sign of heteronormativity and does not have a recognized status in the LGBTQ community. The respondents are expressing a struggle to be seen as authentic in both contexts. The femme- identity is also a political statement which seeks to reshape traditionally heterosexual significants to a new queer meaning. Femmes are using their self-fashioned selfs to acheieve this, and to recognize each other. (Less)
