Abstract
The purpose of this study is to understand how green therapy in social work can be used as a resource to enhance the participant's sense of coherence in terms of meaningfulness, comprehensibility and manageability. Green therapy, a generic term we use in the study, is based on theories of nature's stress-reducing and restorative effect on humans. All respondents in the study were trained social workers, further trained in some kind of green therapy, and had experience of working with green therapy in social work. All respondents in the study were trained social workers, further trained in some kind of green therapy, and had experience of working with green therapy in social work. The collected material was then transcribed verbatim and coded based on themes that provided a meaningful structure to the material and analysis. The material was then analysed based on Antonovsky's concept of meaningfulness, comprehensibility and manageability that together create the concept sense of coherence, which is part of the salutogenic perspective. The results of the study show how green therapy, in different ways, is used as a resource in social work. The result also indicates that the use of these resources could ultimately lead to greater sense of coherence with the participant. (Less)
