Abstract
The aim of this study was to analyze the discourse of the theories by John Gray about relationships between men and women. The basis of this study was to analyze the social structures in our society today. I wanted to answer the questions following: In what way does John Gray construct male and female qualities in the literature? In what kind of discourse does John Gray discuss love? And how the theories of John Gray about gender roles fits in our modern society today? The method used was a critical analysis about the social frameworks and the discourses about male and female gender roles. Both in the literature by John Gray and also by viewing other theories about gender roles. In the study I analyzed the structure of the literature at... (More)
The aim of this study was to analyze the discourse of the theories by John Gray about relationships between men and women. In the study I analyzed the structure of the literature at first to find the meaning of his theories. After that I analyzed the discourse he uses to pinpoint his theories. And at the end I analyzed the social structure that John Gray and his theories act in. My result did show that John Gray construct male and female qualities by describing them as there matching opposites. The opposites of male and female qualities attract and are the most important components of a relationship. When John Gray talks about love he describes it with the story about the mighty knight and the helpless princess. This story illustrates male and female emotional needs. John Gray describes the changes that individualization has made in our society today. His point of view is by discussing the changes women have made by questioning equality as not only a positive progress. I have chosen the literature to the study based on the topic of relationships between men and women and also based on the year they were published. I had no aim to cover a large area of the literature published by John Gray. I did only choose four books to try to find a depth instead. (Less)
