The aim of this study was to gather views of five members and of one staff member, on a Fountain House and describe and analyze these views through an aspect of the term empowerment. The two main questions are thus: Is there something with a Fountain House, through five members and one staff member’s views on its agency, which strengthens empowerment for the interviewed members? Is there something with a Fountain House, through five members and one staff member’s views on its agency, which weakens empowerment for the interviewed members? This study was based on six semi structured interviews. The sample consisted of five adults whom were members and had or have contact with the psychiatric care and one adult who is a staff member. The results showed that some of the interviewed members found that they were helped through the fellowship that the Fountain House offered. The results also showed, that members and staff members learned from each other, the Fountain House provided opportunities for the members to participate in different ways in the agency and that the Fountain House is admitting and supporting when a member doesn´t work and/or feel down. Furthermore, the results of this study showed that a member sometimes was given a hard time to express oneself during meetings at the Fountain House and that some members were mostly quiet during these meetings. The results also showed that two members experienced unsecure relations with others at the Fountain House. The conclusions of this study are that there are within a Fountain House, factors that strengthen empowerment for the interviewed members and other factors that weaken empowerment for some of the interviewed members. Another conclusion of this study is that there is a factor that can hinder a strengthening of empowerment for one of the interviewed members. (Less)
