It is easy to forget that when we consume we do not only consume a product we are also consuming other peoples labour and landscapes in, many times, far off places. With daily news on environmental damages, people are becoming more aware. Consequently, people are getting more interested in the origin of their food and what impact it has on the environment. The Slow Food movement is working against a fast food culture and industrialization of food and have over 100 000 members all over the world. Abstract: The food consumption of today’s world has led to an overconsumption of the earth resources. Slow Food believes in, and works for food that is good, clean and fair. Informed and selective consumers become co-producers by demanding good food. Olive trees and its olive oil play a major part in the life of people around the Mediterranean countries. Apart from employing several millions, it also plays a part in the history, food and mythology of these countries. The world’s largest producers and consumers of olive oil are Spain, Italy and Greece. Adopting an olive tree means to pay a producer, or a company (middleman), for the assurance that the olive tree and its surroundings will be taken care of with full awareness and respect for the natural habitat and endorse a sustainable agriculture. The adoption is paid yearly and the adopter or customer will also receive oil from the olive grove. The study shows that the idea of adopting an olive tree does contribute to the goals and visions of the Slow Food movement. An adopter of an olive tree will become a co-producer as the word is defined by the movement. Finally an adoption of an olive tree will safeguard the environment in the olive groves and lead to a more sustainable food consumption. (Less)
