Abstract
The purpose of this essay was to examine the language of Kazantzakis with its different aspects, such as his Cretan dialect, his dimotiki, foreign loan words as well as his own neologisms, everything with focus upon his later book Αναφορά στον Γκρέκο. I will walk through the author's life, his studies, jobs, far away traveling, self-exile, as well as the influences, thoughts and spiritual questions that very much affected his personality. I will walk through the author's life, his studies, jobs, far away traveling, self-exile, as well as the influences, thoughts and spiritual questions that very much affected his personality. After follows a short review of different known works, where a large proportion is given to the voluminous Οδύσσεια, with its unusual words. Most of the focus though is shown upon Report to Greco, which is the central theme of the essay. I will give background information about the Cretan dialect, its different pronunciations, special morphology and syntax, and vocabulary. Here also comes a section about some small words in the Cretan dialect, as the adverb μαθές and the different forms of θέλω. I will mention general information about dimotiki, Kazantzakis' multilinguality, and political and linguistical involvement. This work as well contains interesting characteristics about the language of the author. There is also a historic section about foreign loan words in Αναφορά στον Γκρέκο, where the Venetian and the Turkish are most dominant. Lastly a section about neologisms, in which an introduction with history is given, with focus on Kazantzakis' own neologisms. (Less)
