Purpose: The study aims to understand how professional status is experienced by the communicator in the public sector. Our intention with this study is to contribute to the field of strategic communication with increased knowledge about the professional status of the communicator in the public sector from a practitioner’s perspective.
Methodology: A qualitative case study was carried out at Helsingborgs stad, including semi-structured interviews with 10 communicators.
Conclusion: Our study shows that communicators in the public sector have different perceptions of their professional status. We have been able to see that the management’s understanding of communication management affects how communicators experience their professional status. There are indications revealing that professional status is valued more by communicators in cases where management sees communication as something that permeates the entire organization, and lower in cases where management sees communication as a sector function.
