- Abstract
- This examination paper will examine the reporting of the Husby riot during May of 2013 in four different Swedish national newspapers. I have taken a qualitative approach to analyse 40 newspaper articles that were written during the course of the riot. I chose to analyse articles that were written during the riot because I wanted to find out how the newspapers wrote about the riot and the people who were involved in it, when it was happening.
This is not the first time a riot has broken out in Sweden nor in the world, however the mass media still sensationalise it as if it has never happened before. One explanation could be that the newspapers need news of value to survive financially.

This is not the first time a riot has broken out in Sweden nor in the world, however the mass media still sensationalise it as if it has never happened before. One explanation could be that the newspapers need news of value to survive financially.
The purpose of this paper is to examine how the young people, who were involved in the riot, were portrayed, as well as the relation between the police, fire department and rioters during the course of the riot.
Two theories have been used to analyse the 40 newspaper articles. The two theories are Postcolonial theory and discourse analysis. Both theories emphasise on the power the language has in differentiating people from each other.
Conclusively, this paper has found that the mass media has for example divided the young people who participated in the riot into two groups; the dangerous ones with aggressions against society and the one who were lured to participate in the riot. The police is portrayed differently in the mass media, ranging from being perpetrators who harassed the rioters because of their background and ethnicity, as victims and as the neighbourhoods saviours.
