Even though the amount of people with depression has increased, the education of social workers at Lund University regarding this subject is limited. To gain this knowledge, the aim of this study was to examine how people with depression constructs themselves as depressed and the experience of the disease. In addition, their experience of what helps, or hurts, recovery as well as their perceived causes to depression was reviewed. The purpose was to examine a client perspective on the subject, hence a qualitative content analysis studying autobiographies with a social constructionist approach was being conducted. Theories used for analyzing our material was social categorization, empowerment and professional theory. The conclusion of our analysis was that individuals describe the experience of depression as a darkness with a lack of hope. The individuals describe themselves as guilty to the consequences of the disease, in relation to both themselves as well as their beloved ones. Concerning recovery, antidepressive medication and a good relationship to a charitable therapist was essentuated as important aspects. (Less)
