- Abstract
- The purpose of this essay has been to examine which ideal image lies ahead for men to identify with, concerning appearance and status as well as the main presentation of masculinity. Further the purpose was to examine whether the image of the ideal man according to today’s mass media, affect everyday men in their everyday- and lifechoices and whether it has affected their self-esteem and their sense of identity. - The purpose of this essay has been to examine which ideal image lies ahead for men to identify with, concerning appearance and status as well as the main presentation of masculinity. Further the purpose was to examine whether the image of the ideal man according to today’s mass media, affect everyday men in their everyday- and lifechoices and whether it has affected their self-esteem and their sense of identity. The essay was built on a qualitative method, I have interviewed five men in the age range of 23 to 31 as well as a magazine that targets young men, in an effort to find out which picture lies ahead for men to relate to. A common answer among the group regarding masculinity was that men are strong and big, focus was set on men’s bodies. A similar picture was shown in the particular magazine. All of the respondents said that they have experienced the increased concern and awareness in men’s aspiration to fit in with the ideal. At the same time most of them stated that their own self-esteem and development of identity had little to do with the mass media portrayal of the ideal image of masculinity. (Less)
