Abstract (Swedish)
I mikroskop plockades fossil... (More)

Ingen chockad kvarts hittades i provet. Abstract
In this thesis, paleontological and impakt related studies have been made on a sediment sample taken from an anomalous red clay layer in Switzerland. The clay layer belongs to the Upper Freshwater Molasse and was deposited at approximately 14 Ma. In other nearby and contemporary deposits shocked quartz and shatter cones have been identified and therefore it is possibile that this clay layer also was formed due to an impakt. The Swiss Molasse Basin, in which the clay layer is found , is a classic foreland basin, formed in connection to the Alpine orogeny. The sediments in the area are divided into four sequences, depending on whether the environment was marine or terrestrial. Resolution and sieving of the sample taken from the red clay... (More)

The sediments in the area are divided into four sequences, depending on whether the environment was marine or terrestrial. Resolution and sieving of the sample taken from the red clay layer allowed for a careful examination of its contents. A microscope used to find fossils and quartz grains which were then studied. The depositional environment in which the red layer was formed was probably a small oxbow lake of stagnant water that gradually dried out. No shocked quartz was found in the sample. However, the clay layer may consist of ejected material from a larger contemporary crater, such as the Ries impact crater, since this material not always contain chocked quartz. (Less)
