(2014) PSPT02 20141Department of Psychology
- Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
- Abstract
- The purpose of this study was to reach a deeper understanding of the emotional experience of growing up with a sibling with severe mental or physical illness or disability. In addition to this, the purpose was to investigate how individuals feel they have been affected by these experiences in regard to their ability to experience and express happiness, anger, guilt and shame. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten participants who were recruited through a survey. The interview data was analyzed with thematic analysis and eleven themes were identified. The most prominent part of the result was that the participants felt that they in varying degree restrict their own emotions and needs, both for fear of strong emotions and... (More)

The most prominent part of the result was that the participants felt that they in varying degree restrict their own emotions and needs, both for fear of strong emotions and because of consideration for others. The strong bond to the sibling and the strong cohesion in the family can be contributing to the participants increased readiness to mentalize about others’ feelings, and decreased readiness to mentalize about themselves. The result was discussed in relation to existing research and theories, with concluding remarks on practical implications and ideas for future research. (Less)
