- Abstract
- The aim of this research has been to examine how social workers in the field of social assistance view and relate to the phenomena of stigma and shame. Shame being a common experience among welfare recipients, knowledge of how administrators of welfare perceive and respond to their clients’ feelings of shame has been sought. Employing a qualitative approach, six interviews were conducted in two municipalities in southern Sweden. The interviewees expressed a variety of different experiences, perceptions and possessed numerous strategies in responding to emotions of shame held by clients.
