The aim of this study was to illustrate how hospital social workers can work with children as dependents where a parent or other adult with whom the child lives permanently has a serious physical illness or injury. More specifically its aim was to find out how the hospital social workers themselves looked upon the surrounding conditions to meet these needs, legislative and on the principle of the best interests of the child. The empirical data consisted of qualitative semi-structured interviews with five hospital social workers. My empirical data has been processed and analyzed using systems theory and the theory of sense of coherence, inspired by a grounded theory method. My study shows how the interviewed hospital social workers from a holistic perspective, was taking into account both the law and the principle of the best interests of the child, but based on the individual child's situation. This balancing act of potential conflicts between different parts of the child's best interests is handled by the hospital social workers through working with the entire family system. (Less)
