(2014) In Examensarbete i geologi vid Lunds universitet GEOL01 20141Department of Geology
- Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
- Abstract
- The project has been implemented by means of literature studies. The studies in the literature have been based on geographical information systems (GIS), digital terrain model (DTM), field survey and seismic reflection. The project has been outlined the differences and similarities between ancient and modern drumlins and an attempt to determine how common drumlins are at modern glaciers. The study showed that the similarities than the differences. The most significant differences are the symmetric of ancient drumlins. The literature indicated that most drumlins are classically asymmetric while GIS survey show that symmetric drumlins are most common and instead is classic asymmetric and reversed asymmetric rare. The literature indicated that most drumlins are classically asymmetric while GIS survey show that symmetric drumlins are most common and instead is classic asymmetric and reversed asymmetric rare. The study also show that the topography, morphology and material composition is similar in ancient and modern drumlins. Most drumlins have a length between 250 m to 1000 m, width from 120 m to 300 m and that the proportionality (length/width) of between 1.7 to 4.1. The most common height is 4 m. Most drumlins composition consist of moraine. The second significant result was, seismic reflection survey in Antarctica, the discovery of a modern drumlin formation for the first time. At ice front fracture occurs as a radial distribution patterns. Cracking pattern consistent with drumlins scattering pattern. These similarities mean that there are more drumlins in the ice edge. Field investigations on the Island of ice core drumlins shows that there are transitional forms from drumlin to hilly moraine. And that this discovery could lead to reinterpretations of ancient landforms. Drumlins at modern glaciers are rare. (Less)
