Abstract
Purpose: This study aims to analyse how medias news framing affects the public’s perception of what is reported. Our intention is further, with Max’s monthly letter as a basis, to understand how it came to be perceived by the public as a political encouragement, and how the border between legitimate and illegitimate opinion forming can be perceived and understood in relation to the freedom of speech and prevailing society norms. We further see the new media landscape as a modern phenomenon that not only has made it possible for the individual citizen to make his voice heard via the social media, but also has become an additional source for medias framing. Our purpose is therefore further to analyse how crises both are created and developed... (More)
Purpose: This study aims to analyse how medias news framing affects the public’s perception of what is reported. Our purpose is therefore further to analyse how crises both are created and developed because of the conditions of the new media landscape and the social practice they operate within.

Methodology: A qualitative case study where we have, through the use of a critical discourse analysis, analysed chosen media texts.

Conclusion: Our study shows how a crisis can be created and developed because of: the traditional medias framing, the individual citizens participation through the new media landscape, and the social practice that crises are created in, operated within and further maintained. The highlighting of Max’s monthly letter is a clear example of a crisis situation that is socially constructed by norms that characterise and are characterised by different discourses prevailing in Swedish society. Norms are also what forms and composes the social practice, which in turn characterises medias news selection and framing. Our study therefore shows that it is a mutual causality that characterises the social context that crises today operate within. (Less)
Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
